Living in Marco Island
Marco Island is the largest barrier island in the Ten Thousand Islands and one of the most popular places to live on the Gulf Coast. The city covers about 24 square miles and has about 16,000 full-time residents. The population grows to around 40,000 in the winter season. It sits about 20 miles south of Naples.
Water is everywhere on Marco. The island has six miles of white-sand beach and more than 100 miles of waterways, so many homes have a dock in the backyard. Most of the island was developed starting in the 1960s by the Mackle brothers and the Deltona Corporation.
